Accreditation of Joint Degree in Arts at Ph.D. Level

The Ph.D. in artistic research within art practice and creation at Østfold University College, in collaboration with Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences and UiT The Arctic University of Norway, has been accredited by NOKUT's board.

"NOKUT congratulates the three institutions on the new joint degree. The broad collaboration between each of the three institutions, along with international research groups and institutions both within and outside academia, is highlighted by the expert committee as one of the strengths of this joint degree," says NOKUT's director, Kristin Vinje.

The Ph.D. program will create opportunities for creative artistic and academic collaboration across institutions. The added value of such collaboration for the institutions, through each individual doctoral project, will provide opportunities to merge various academic contexts and open new areas. The joint degree spans geographically from north to south. The application demonstrated that all three institutions work methodically to develop a comprehensive academic framework that will support all students, regardless of their geographic location.

The Ph.D. program encompasses existing artistic disciplines at the three institutions. The overarching academic areas for the program include scenography, performing arts, all disciplines in the development and production of film and related audiovisual art forms, visual arts including moving images, landscape architecture, and music.

About the Institutions

Østfold University College (HiØ) is an accredited university college and does not have accreditation rights to accredit Ph.D. programs on its own. HiØ is the formal applicant for the joint degree and has now received accreditation for its second doctoral degree. HINN has had temporary accreditation in artistic research since 2022, which could be continued within the joint degree. As a university, UiT has full accreditation rights to establish this Ph.D. program independently without applying to NOKUT.
